The Township board last night (06/22/09), passed a resolution prohibiting eminent domain in most situations by a vote of 3-1-1. A complete copy will be posted with voting details as soon as I get my hands on a copy.
On Wednesday, July 2nd, the neptune zoning board will have a meeting at the Summerfield Elementary School at 7:30 pm to discuss the replacement of three of the mobile homes with newer units. The park is located near the corner of Steiner and 6th Avenues.
Approval has been held up over minor code issues. Considering that most of the code issues are pre-existing issues, and that the park only wants to update/upgrade older units with newer ones, overall, changing the units are a plus for all concerned.
While I’m not an expert on mobile homes and their construction, I’m sure that the newer ones are better built, better insulated, and have better fire ratings than the older ones. Letting an existing facility update it’s units, while not meeting 100% of current code(s), can only be a plus for the community. The owners of Metpark get to maintain their income base, the residents of get newer (and undoubtedly safer) trailers, and the neighbourhood gets a facelift of an existing property.
While only those withing the required distance of the trailer park received notices of the meeting, all local residents who support updating, while maintaining the character of the neighbourhood are encouraged to attend and show support.

The appeals hearings in the Long Branch Eminent Domain decision began today in Trenton.

For every resident and business in the Transit Village area of Neptune, there are different reasons for wanting to stay, or even to leave. Families have grown up here, and new property owners have invested their time, money, sweat, and love into their homes and businesses.
Over the last few years, all of us here have had the specter of eminent domain over our heads. While the city has made some assurances that it won’t be used on any of our properties, it has also not moved forward on a resolution or ordinance preventing it’s use here, or anywhere else in Neptune Township.
One thing that the recent events have reminded us is that all of in this area are a community. What affects any of the people here, in some way will effect others.
